The Fun of Geocaching
Geocaching is a a fun game of hide-and-seek. It began about ten years ago and is spreading like wildfire! There are over a million geocaches (caches) hidden throughout the world. Caches are placed and found using a GPS (Global Positioning System) device. In the past, seekers of caches used devices created specifically for GPS purposes. However, today many mobile phones have GPS capabilities. Just download a GPS application, record the cache coordinates from an internet listing site, and begin your search!
A cache is a small, weatherproof container of your choosing. It can be as simple as a plastic container with a lid; or it can be more elaborate such as a sturdy, metal box. As
caches are hidden outdoors, the main consideration when choosing a cache is durability since it will be sitting in the elements.
Inside a cache you will find a logbook, pencil or pen, and various trinkets. When you locate a cache, sign your name to the logbook. It’s always interesting to see the names of people who have found the cache before you. Adding the date it was found and a short note will make the logbook even more fun to read. There are usually trinkets in the cache also. The rule is “take a trinket, leave a trinket.” If you have nothing to leave, just observe the treasure.
Geocaching is for everyone! It can be enjoyed alone or in a group, and it can take place on a stroll through the park or while backpacking in treacherous terrain. So what are you waiting for? Get out today and play a game of hide-and-seek!
